Centerville traveled to Seton Catholic on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup here in Wayne County. Both teams came pumped up and ready to go in this one as they energy never left the building.
It was a great turnout at Seton Catholic as fans stayed for both the JV and V games. The packed house brought a lot of noise. The Jv game kicked us off and even though the Bulldogs won 2-0, there were a lot of high points for both teams that kicked the night off on the right note in the stands.
Centerville opened up the matchup a bit slow in the varsity contest, but rallied back and took the lead thanks to some stellar play by Goodman sisters (Chloe & Gracie). These Lady Bulldogs sparked the energy late helping the Bulldogs take set one 25-16.
Set two slipped away early for the Lady Cardinals but they would not lose faith battling for some tough points. Junior Ella Berger and Senior Lydia Reichley really kept the spirits high for the Cardinals. Centerville’s Aly Blake and Ava McCurdy added to the great play by Chloe and Gracie Goodman to give the Lady Bulldogs a dominant set two win 25-14, and huge advantage up 2-0.
The Cardinals however would not go away. The fans came to life in set three as they would not let their Cardinals go away. The energy in the building picked up and rattled the Lady Bulldogs. They staggered their way along in this one trying to find their identity as it seemed to fade here in set three. Freshman Bryn VanVleet truly made an impact for the Cardinals as the Bulldogs had no answer for her attack up front. VanVleet although effective in sets one and two, her set three play carried the Lady Cardinals to a 25-23 win.
Centerville still with the advantage 2-1, did not back down. As in past games the Lady Bulldogs struggled to close out, but here tonight they did not. After a brief talk with Coach Bruno the Lady Bulldogs stormed out to an early lead in set four thanks to the effort of Seniors Aly Blake and Lilly Waters for truly setting the tone. This followed by the stellar play from Ava McCurdy and Chloe Goodman attacking at the net, gave the Lady Bulldogs a set four win 25-18, and the matchup 3-1.
Both teams showed flashes of their youth as there were only three total seniors playing in this one. Both the Cardinals and Bulldogs are building around a young core for the future. Great coaching staffs surround both teams, as they look to regain top status around Wayne County, and find themselves in a Sectional Championship this fall.
Quick stats for the Bulldogs include: Chloe Goodman & Gracie Goodman with 10 kills each, plus a combined 28 digs. Aly Blake had 7 kills, 3 aces, and 15 digs. Ava McCurdy had 7 kills and 8 digs, while Lilly Waters tallied up 30 assists and 2 kills.
Both squads back in action Thursday, Centerville traveling to take on Richmond and Seton Catholic traveling to take on Northeastern. Both events are JV and V. Start times are 6pm!
