Richmond hosted Connersville on the first night of regular season action here in the state of Indiana. A week one home game for the Red Devils meant a packed house as both sides of the stands were filled. Fans, students, cheerleaders, and band packed Lybolt Field awaiting the start of the new season.
Richmond came in with high aspirations on the season, and wanted to start the season off right with a statement win versus Connersville. They did just that after some early offensive struggles from the new varsity quarterback Jayden Shipp. It was a battle early as Connersville struck first, but the Red Devils responded with a 71 yard touchdown run by Lucas Hall. Richmond then took the lead late in the second quarter as Sophomore QB Jayden Shipp broke free from a tackle and threw a pass to John Carter for a score. Connersville put together a great two minute drill right before half to tie things up 14-14.
Red Devils came out of the locker room at half time pumped up as they capitalized early with another touchdown run for Lucas Hall making it 20-14. As the third quarter was expiring, Richmond put themselves a nice drive together which they were able to capitalize on early in the fourth as Jayden Shipp rushed on in from a few yards out making it 28-14. Connersville capitalized a minute later on a missed assignment as Gavin Pearson connected with Brayden Pearson on a 70 yard touchdown pass making it 28-21. Moments later Richmond took one to the house as Demarco Owens broke a huge run for a score, putting Richmond back out in front two scores 34-21. The opening minute frame of the fourth quarter resulted in 3 total quick scores. Time was starting to click away, but Connersville was able to get a quick strike with 7:57 to go in the 4th quarter after Pearson hit DeBoard for a 54 yard score. A minute later Richmond go the ball in the hands on their top play maker Marquis Johnson and he took one to the house, as no one could catch him after he got into the open field. Richmond now had control by two scores with just under 6 minutes to play. Richmond now led 42-27. The Red Devils defense got a big defensive stand as Connersville could not cut it down to one score. Richmond then took the solid field position to their advantage as Lucas Hall rushed one in from 11 yards out making it 48-27 Richmond. Connersville responded with a Seifert rushing touchdown but it was two late. Richmond capped off the night in victory formation with a final score of 48-33.
Richmond now 1-0 will turn their attention to next week as they travel on the road to take on Shelbyville who is 0-1. Shelbyville fell to Greensburg 42-21. Richmond won the last meeting with Shelbyville back in 2012. Richmond will be looking for their first 2-0 start since 1994.
